What are you currently studying and what is your role at ABO Energy?
I’ve just completed my Bachelor's degree in Geography and am now beginning my Master's in the same field in Cologne. I currently work as a student assistant in project planning for wind and solar installations as well as battery storage systems at the Cologne office. In my role, I support the project managers in all stages of planning – from contract management to spatial planning in QGIS. The tasks are very varied, and it never gets boring.
Can you tell us a bit about your journey at ABO Energy?
I first came across ABO Energy while looking for a placement for my mandatory 8-week internship during my studies. I was lucky to complete it in wind project planning at the Wiesbaden office, which I really enjoyed. I gained many exciting insights into project planning, made new friends and found the working atmosphere particularly relaxed and friendly. That’s why I decided to continue working at ABO Energy as a student assistant.
In Wiesbaden, I supported several projects across different federal states and learned a lot about wind energy. When I started my Master's, I moved to Cologne and initially worked at the Dortmund office. There, my responsibilities expanded to include solar projects and battery storage systems, giving me broader insights and tasks. In Dortmund, I became more deeply involved in active planning, which helped me realise that working in renewable energy project planning is what I want to do professionally. The field covers many aspects – from legal questions to spatial planning and contract-related topics – all of which I find fascinating.
When the Cologne office became an official location, I transferred there to reduce my commute. My responsibilities remained the same, as I’m still part of the student team in Dortmund.
Is there a project you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of?
Yes, definitely. During my time in Wiesbaden, I contributed significantly to the first hydrogen project in Hünfeld. I’m especially proud that it was recently completed and is now operational. I was really happy for everyone involved. This project stands out in my memory because it was very innovative and a refreshing change from my usual wind energy planning. Hydrogen is also a key element in Germany’s energy transition, and I’m excited to see how things develop in the coming years.
What’s the atmosphere like in your team?
As student assistants, we’re not assigned to a fixed team, as we generally support all project managers across NRW. I’ve only had positive experiences with the teams at the various locations and find the atmosphere very relaxed, friendly and pleasant.
As a working student, I’m deeply involved in project processes, which I really appreciate. Project management can be very demanding, so I’m always grateful when time is taken to explain the different procedures and projects to us students. I feel very well supported at ABO Energy and am glad to be working in such a welcoming and friendly environment.
